Afghanistan is a landlocked country in the southern Asia. Its area size is about 647,500 Sqkm, with the population of about 32 million. It is bordered with Turkmenistan, Uzebekistan and Tajikistan on the north and China on the extreme northeast, Pakistan on the east and south, and Iran on the west. High mountain range, called Hindu Kush, runs through the country, dividing Afghanistan into east and west, rising to the heights of 24,000 feet in the eastern part of the range. Most parts of the country is covered with snow-capped mountains and deep vallleys.
Afghanistan is made of Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Aimak, Turkmen, Baloch. Afghan peopel speaks: Dari Persian, Pashtu both are official langauge and Turkic. Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan with about 2.2 million living in the capital, other major cities are like Herat in the west, Kandahar in the south and Mazar-e sharif on the north. Afghanistan is world’s largest producer of opium.
Afghanistan came into being, when it was unified in the mid 1700s, later it became the battle ground for the control of central Asia between Russian Empire and the British Empire. In 1893, British established unofficial border, Durand line, separating British India from Afghanistan. Afghanistan was given full independence by the British in 1919.
The Democracy was short lived by 1973 coup and the communist counter-coup in 1978. Soviet Union (old Russia), invaded to support the faltering communist regime, the conflict went on until 1989, when Soviet Union withdrew due to continuous international pressure and the local anti communist fighters. After several civil wars, in 1996 Afghanistan fell to Taliban, the hard-line movement sponsored by Pakistan. Taliban government was only recognised by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as a legitimate government of Afghanistan.  But, after the 11 September 2001 attack in New York City, Pentagon and Pennsylvania - US Allied force, anti-Taliban Northern Alliance toppled the Taliban. In December 2004, Hamid Karzai was elected the President of Afghanistan. Today, though Afghanistan is ruled by democratic government, Taliban is still the challenge to the Afghan government, specially in the south and the east of the country.

CIA

Posted in Intelligence organisations on December 28th, 2008 by Thulung – 1 Comment

The Central Intelligence Agency, mostly commonly known as CIA is the foreign intelligence agency of the United States. It’s primary function is collecting and analysing information about foreign governments, corporations, groups, individuals and organisations inside or outside US soil. It’s headquarter is in Langley, Virginia, just a few kilometers from Washington DC along the Potomac River. Budget and number of employees working for CIA is classified and unknown, but it is estimated to be thousands about 20,000 employees, with budget something about US$10 Billion a year to run the agency.
The creation of CIA goes well back to baby boomers’ days the year 1947. It was formed by US Congress with National Security Act of 1947 (US), signed into law by President Truman after the WW II. As far as it’s activities are concerned it is one of the most grey scale type of government organisation in the world. CIA’s activities are defined both patriotic and controversial, depending on the side you are looking from.
Beside, monitoring threat(s) to US economy, national security and interest. Other interests and activities are: assassination of terrorist leaders, enthroning or dethroning of the government(s), espionage, paramilitary activities, training local to fight against unwanted government and organisations in foreign countries, only to name some.
Some of the CIA’s activities and involvement around the world: Korean War, Cold War, Eastern Europe - East Germany/Berlin blockade, U2 flying over Soviet air space, assassination attempts against the Cuban communist President Fidel Castro, South East Asia during the 1960s, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Afghan War against former USSSR, creation of Bin Laden, rise and fall of Saddam Hussein, Gulf War I and II,  Africa, South America and the list goes on. Today, they are active in most of the countries of the world.
Today, although the CIA Directory may brief the President directly. It is answerable directly to the Director of National Intelligence. The CIA’s budget are approved by the US Congress, but however agency does not take direct orders from the congress. CIA, one of the world’s most well known intelligence organisation has some of the best and well trained officers, it also has some of the world’s most corrupt officers that can be found in the government organisations. This well known intelligence was first headed by Rear Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter. Today it is headed by General (Ret.) Michael Hayden, USAF.
